Telemedicine
in the Amazon Jungle:
an Opportunity for Sharing
Would you like to support
a program which joins together in an exciting and path-breaking initiative
things like:
-
Distant, poor and isolated
rural communities in the middle of the Amazon jungle, in urgent need of
healthcare and education;
-
A pioneering educational
effort which puts last-year medical students in these communities for helping
them out with prevention, care and health education;
-
The use of a high tech telemedicine
system via satellite for supporting these students directly by their professors
in Manaus' Medical School, and providing them with access to Internet e-health,
studying materials and interactive communication?
The
Project for Distance Education and Telemedicine Support to Rural Medical
Internship in the Amazon, which is being developed by the EduMed Institute
for Education in Medicine and Health, a Brazilian not-for-profit foundation,
is an ideal project for humanitarian grants.
Your
donation will help to improve health status and access to quality education
of thousands of inhabitants of the ecological sanctuaries in the huge Amazon
forest, saving lives and at the same time turning high technology and Internet
into really useful tools for promoting human welfare in desperately poor
areas. They are the best solution for many difficult problems.
The world wants Brazilians
to preserve their huge "green lung", the incredibly large and dense rain
forests of the Amazon basin. Its biodiversity is unsurpassed and still
remains largely unexplored. It may harbor a fantastic trove of new medicines.
Human density is very low, and the population is dispersed, with enormous
distances separating them. In order that the forest remains unspoiled,
this way of life must continue, but we must support a better quality of
life of its inhabitants, particularly in health and education.
This project will surely
make a difference for the towns and villages, which are lucky enough to
get Manaus' medical students. But many, many others have not this opportunity
and have difficult access to medical care throughout the year. Telemedicine
and distance education are the tools of the future to help rescue these
citizens of the jungle and to bring medical expertise from afar nearer
to their homes.
Help
them, and you will be an active participant of this fascinating and humanitarian
project.
If you
want to know more, ask for our information package, including a full description
of the project, and reports and photos produced by the medical students
who worked at Envira. It is a fascinating and heart-rending account you
will never forget. Also, if you would like to visit Manaus and know firsthand
one of the places where the rural internship takes place, we can help you
to organize a safe and economical journey to the great Amazon region.
